The hungry traveler; Travel Tips

Whenever I travel by air, I usually have at least one layover.  This is due to living new an airport that is a hub for nothing.  Because of this, I often have long travel days with lots of opportunity to eat poorly and expensively.  This leaves me feeling sluggish upon arrival and wishing my money was better spent.

Eating in airports:
*First, know where you are going.  You can google the vendors available in the airport you know you will be eating at before your trip.  Select your meal choices by using on line menus.  If you know what concourse your preferred dining is in, you can head the correct direction off the plane.
*Pack homemade trial mix pouches for those close call layovers.  This will help keep you from being tempted to eat the goodies served on the plane.
*Bring an empty reusable water bottle through security and fill it up at a drinking fountain once at your gate.  It is best to stay hydrated.  This will also keep you from spending money on expensive one time use water bottles.
*Eat a good meal before you go to the airport.  Simple, it may seem, but if you hard boil eggs the night before or make a fruit salad, you will be less likely to skip the all important meal.
*Keep in mind that places like Starbucks also have oatmeal, so don't indulge in the pastries.

Happy well fed travels, my friends.

I always eat a big meal before heading to the airport and then google the vendors there and try to grab a sandwich for the plane if it's a long flight. Being vegan and boycotting McDonald's makes airport eating really really hard!

Such good tips, my favorite is the reuseable water bottle. I never thought of bringing it but I am become dehydrated like nothing else on a plane and have to buy those huge expensive water bottles so this is super useful for me!

Lisa I am so with you on this. I always carry snacks in my carry on b/c of the gluten issue, but had started even prior to that. The only place I'll eat is at Anthony's at Sea-Tac. It was a fave place of mine and I was never so happy to see it in an airport.

GREAT advice....I don't know why I have never thought of googling vendor options in the airports before! It's such a good idea because usually you are lugging a carry-on bag and don't want to walk all over the airport to find good options. Therefore I end up eating whatever is close and easy, and just like you said..poorly and expensively. Not to mention lack of taste! From now on I'm going to google... :) Speaking of oatmeal, Jamba Juice has amazing oatmeal!!

Unless we have a long layover, we try to eat before we leave and we munch on the snacks on the plane. If we have to wait a few hours, then we treat ourselves to one of the restaurants at the terminal. Also, a warm cappuciono always does the trick for me. Very filling and not that pricey.

The water advice is so true. Always having water on hand, just in small sips, goes far in keeping us feeling well in so many ways. Thanks for visiting my blog, I enjoyed browsing here!

Great advice! I can't believe I never thought of looking up what's available at the airport.
I usually try to pack a meal in my carry on that I can pull out at about hour five of travel. If I'm traveling between my family's place in Puerto Rico and the States, I'll take a big sandwich from the local bakery, and it feels like I'm extending my vacation just a little.

I think that's one thing I hate about travelling a lot. Until you get to the actual destination, you are stuck with unhealthy and very pricey food.

Thanks for the tips!

So so true!! Trying to eat in airports is such a pain sometimes. Not to mention, it's damn near impossible for me to make it from one city or another without spilling something on myself lol.
